Dear Friends,
My sympathy goes out to any of you who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene, in ways large or small. Helene ravaged Asheville, where I live, as well as broader Western North Carolina. Well over a hundred deaths have been reported, and I have no doubt that, sadly, that number will only increase in the coming days and weeks as recovery crews reach new areas. I and my family have been relatively fortunate, suffering only minor damage to homes as well as the lack of power, cellular service, internet, and—most difficult of all—running water. Power and internet service have been restored at my house, but no one knows when running water will be restored for hundreds of thousands of us here in WNC. The authorities are unwilling to even offer estimated timelines at this point, the damage—both known and yet to be discovered—is so extensive.
Resource distribution centers have been set up across the region, providing drinking water, food, clothing, sanitary supplies, baby supplies, and pet food. Field hospitals are also in operation. If you'd like to help recovery efforts, WNCW, a regional public radio station, has a good list of reputable places accepting donations here (scroll down the page).
Despite the hardship, Orison Books intends to continue its vital mission of publishing exceptional literary work that engages the life of the spirit. Through all the vicissitudes of life, I remain convinced that we need care, nourishment, and healing for our souls as well as for our bodies. With your help, Orison Books will continue playing what role we can in that necessary work. If you'd like to support us, please consider making a contribution here.
With Gratitude, Always,
Luke Hankins Founder & Editor Orison Books
